Type Locality and Naming
Eastern Zhejiang The Liangtoutang Formation was erected by the Zhejiang Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1994. The section for the designation is in Liangtoutang about 7 km west of the Tiantai County of Zhejiang, which is divided into two parts, the lower from Liangtoutang to Shitang and the upper from Qingxi to Xitang.

Lithology and Thickness
The Liangtoutang Formation is mainly represented by a set of purple red moderately thick-bedded clayey siltstone, and sandy conglomerate, intercalated with light purple rhyolitic vitric tuff and ignimbrite.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Its base marked by purple red sandy conglomerate with siltstone is distinguished from the underlying Tangshang Fm comprising light purple massive rhyolitic crystal-vitric ignimbrite. It shows a conformable contact with the underlying strata.
Upper contact
Its top is bounded by the appearance of purple red moderately thick-bedded conglomerate. It shows a conformable contact with the overlying strata.
Regional extent
The formation mainly occurs in southeast Zhejiang. It is persistent in lithology, but the volcanic partings vary from place to place, which are often seen in the Tiantai basin but seldom found in the Xianju, Huzhen, Shuhong and Lishui basins. It is more than 691 m thick at maximum in the Tiantai basin and only 175 m in the Huzhen basin.
GeoJSON
Fossils
The formation yields Dinosaurian eggs Paraspheroolithus cf. irenensis and bears median lamella and ulna of Ankylosauria at Dashanjiao of the Jinyunhu Town.
Age
Depositional setting
It is of fluvial red bed deposition under the arid and hot climate condition.
